Castings / Material / Original character

Period-correct restoration goes beyond the shape.

For a period-correct casting, matching the outline is only part of the work. Alloy composition, casting texture, wall thickness, machining details, heat treatment and finish all contribute to the result. We can scope a reproduction programme around the surviving original, with appropriate laboratory analysis and specialist manufacturing arranged for the project.

First we document the sample and distinguish original material from later repairs, coatings and corrosion. Sampling locations and any destructive testing are agreed before work begins. Reproduction parts should remain documented as reproductions; recreating an appearance does not make a new part an original factory component.

Identify the alloy before recreating the casting.

X-ray fluorescence — XRF

A useful screening and positive-material-identification technique for many alloying elements. Coatings and surface condition matter. Handheld XRF alone is not a reliable basis for determining the carbon content of an iron or steel casting.

Spark optical emission spectroscopy — spark-OES

Quantitative elemental analysis on a suitably prepared sample, using calibration matched to the alloy family. An appropriately configured instrument can include carbon and other elements needed to distinguish similar grades.

Combustion with infrared detection

Laboratory combustion analysis measures carbon and sulphur in suitable metal samples. Carbon is particularly important when investigating historic iron and steel castings.

ICP optical emission spectroscopy — ICP-OES

Where additional elemental investigation is needed, a laboratory can analyse a prepared, dissolved sample by ICP-OES. The sampling, digestion and calibration method must suit the material and the question being asked.

Method references: spark-OES for iron and steel; cast-iron chemistry and carbon analysis; ICP-OES trace-element analysis.

Chemistry is one part of the evidence.

Metallographic preparation and optical microscopy can reveal the matrix and graphite structure; hardness testing adds another check on material condition. These are material-structure and mechanical checks, not chemical assays. Together with dimensional inspection and an agreed test plan, they help define the casting process, heat treatment and acceptance criteria. Matching chemistry alone does not establish equivalent strength or fatigue life. Cast-iron metallography reference.

Electronics deserve the same attention to originality.

A 2022 DigiKey technical discussion describes a repairer’s search for the small HVAC LCD in a 2008 Bugatti Veyron. The reported component marking was HLM 7854 6329-90, with a 24 × 46-pixel display. It illustrates the difficulty of replacing a small bespoke display when the surrounding controls still work. This is a published external example, not a completed devil.design repair or a verified Bugatti spare-part listing. Read the original technical discussion.

For an enquiry of this kind, we would assess the original display, connector, drive signals, backlight, viewing angle and available space before choosing a repair or replacement route. The aim is to preserve the intended appearance and operation wherever practical; a modern screen is not automatically an interchangeable replacement.

Some parts need a group order.

Patterns, moulds, core boxes, fixtures, foundry setup, bespoke LCD tooling and first-article testing can cost more than the individual parts. A group order can spread those fixed costs across owners, clubs and specialist workshops, making a small production run practical.
